A journey through the Valley of Roses for every patriotic Bulgarian. Explore the birthplaces of many renowned figures from the Bulgarian National Revival. Sopot is the hometown of the patriarch of Bulgarian literature, Ivan Vazov.
Here you will find his house-museum.

In Karlovo, we will pay tribute to the memory of the Apostle of Freedom, Vasil Levski.

We will visit his house-museum, the monument on one of the town squares, and the “St. Nicholas” Church.

The birthplace of Vasil Levski is located in the western part of Karlovo. It dates back to the early period of the Bulgarian National Revival. Built in the 18th century by Kuncho Ivanov, Levski's grandfather, it was later inhabited by his two sons, Ivan and Valyo Kunchev.

On February 19, 2023, we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the hanging of Vasil Levski.
On this date, the Bulgarian people bow their heads in respect to the legacy of Vasil Levski – the Apostle of Freedom. On February 18 (February 6, old style) 1873, near Sofia, the death sentence of this remarkable Bulgarian was carried out. The site of his execution is in the center of present-day Sofia, where his monument now stands. Memorial ceremonies in Bulgaria, however, are organized a day later – on February 19.

Who is Vasil Ivanov Kunchev – Levski?
He was born on July 18, 1837, in Karlovo. Known as Vasil Levski and the Apostle of Freedom, he was the ideologist and organizer of the Bulgarian National Revolution, founder of the Internal Revolutionary Organization (IRO), and the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee (BRCC). He is a Bulgarian national hero. Levski was one of those political figures who, even in his lifetime, earned recognition through his ideas, courage, and deeds. After his heroic death, he became a symbol of all that is pure, democratic, and progressive in Bulgaria’s historical development.

Kalofer is the birthplace of the genius poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev.
In addition to his house, you can visit the school where his father, Botyo Petkov, taught and learn about the teaching methods from a century and a half ago.

Return to Sofia in the late afternoon.
